Your Alarm Installation Handover Checklist

Kiwi Alarms · Practical security guides

Before your installer leaves, check user access, sensor names, notifications, monitoring procedures and the paperwork for your new alarm system.

Make the handover part of the installation

A neat installation is only part of a useful security system. You should also understand how to operate it, who to contact and what your purchase includes. Set aside time for a demonstration rather than accepting a quick explanation at the front door. This checklist gives Reno homeowners a practical way to organise that conversation.

Check the names and everyday controls

Walk through the sensor list with the installer. Labels such as “garage entry door” are easier to act on than “zone 07.” Ask to see the difference between the system’s available arming modes and what happens during an entry delay. Practise normal arming and disarming yourself. Ask how to recognise an open sensor or a trouble message without bypassing protection you still need.

Confirm access and notifications

Check that the main account belongs to you and that your phone can use the app. Review who else has access and what each person can do. Keep installer or support access limited to what is agreed. Ask which events generate an app notification and which go to a monitoring centre; they are not necessarily the same. Verify contact numbers and the agreed order for calling contacts.

Have the provider demonstrate the monitoring process

Ask how the system is tested and how accidental alarms are handled. The provider should arrange any required test mode before a demonstration. Do not trigger an alarm just to see whether responders arrive. Ask what continues working during an internet or power interruption on your specific equipment, what does not, and how backup batteries are maintained. Get model-specific answers rather than a generic promise.

Keep a simple handover record

Save your equipment list, warranty information, invoice, monitoring terms and support number. Record maintenance recommendations and any work still outstanding. Keep sensitive codes in a secure place rather than on a note beside the keypad. Before signing off, try finding an event in the app and explain the daily routine back to the installer. If something is unclear, this is the best time to ask.
