Moving Into a Reno Home With an Existing Alarm: What to Check

Kiwi Alarms · Practical security guides

A practical move-in checklist for alarm ownership, old user access, equipment compatibility and monitoring before you activate an existing system.

Start with an inventory, not a new contract

An alarm panel on the wall does not tell you whether a home is currently monitored. Before moving into a Reno or Sparks property, photograph the panel model, visible sensors, cameras and any recorder. Ask the seller which equipment stays, whether anything is leased, and which company last serviced it. Keep serial numbers and account details private. Do not assume the previous owner’s service transfers with the house.

Separate the equipment from the service

Ask three different questions: who owns the hardware, who controls its account, and who provides monitoring? A working keypad is not proof that alerts reach a monitoring centre. Have the provider confirm the current service status and explain the activation process. Existing equipment may be reusable, but compatibility depends on the model, communication hardware, condition and account restrictions. Get that assessment before agreeing to replacement.

Take control of access

Arrange the proper ownership transfer for connected equipment. Review alarm users, app invitations, smart-lock access and camera sharing with the installer. Remove former occupants’ access through the supported process. Set your own unique account password and enable multifactor authentication where available. Do not factory-reset everything first: you could erase programming or make an otherwise usable system harder to commission.

Walk through the house and test deliberately

Match each named zone to its actual door, window or detector. Check whether renovations added an entrance or changed the layout. Ask the provider to arrange test mode before testing monitored devices, and confirm how normal monitoring resumes. Learn the entry delay, everyday arming modes, cancellation procedure and who receives notifications. Keep emergency contacts current.

Bring these questions to your appointment

Which devices can stay? Which need replacement, and why? What will activation, installation and monitoring cost? Is there a minimum service term? Will the cameras remain usable with the chosen service? Ask for an itemised proposal and written confirmation of any compatibility limits. Kiwi Alarms can discuss the existing equipment and your goals before you decide on a new system.
