How to Plan Security Camera Coverage Before Buying Cameras
Plan entrances, useful viewing angles, recording needs and installation routes before choosing the number of cameras for your Reno property.
Begin with the question each camera must answer
Counting cameras is a poor starting point. Instead, list what you want to know: who approached the front door, whether a side gate opened, or when a delivery reached the driveway. A wide overview and a useful identification view can require different positions. Sketch your property and mark the few approaches that matter most before comparing equipment packages.
Choose views instead of chasing megapixels
For each proposed camera, describe the intended view in one sentence. Ask the installer to show how much of the frame a person will occupy at the important point. A high-resolution camera covering a very large area may still miss the detail you expected. Avoid assuming that a general driveway camera will reliably read moving number plates, especially after dark. That requires a separate assessment.
Review the physical installation
Think about cable routes, power, mounting surfaces, maintenance access and the location of any recorder. Discuss whether the proposed device is wired, Wi-Fi or battery powered, and what that means for your routine. If it uses Wi-Fi, check the connection at the actual mounting point. Do not judge coverage from your phone while standing beside the router inside the house.
Define what happens after an event
Decide whether you want event clips or continuous recording, how long footage should remain available, and who needs access. Ask about storage costs and how recordings are exported. Request a demonstration with ordinary footage rather than discovering the process after something happens. Point cameras at the areas you need to protect and keep unnecessary views into neighbouring private spaces out of the plan.
Agree on a day and night acceptance check
Ask how the finished views will be checked in daylight and darkness. Doorway lighting, headlights and nearby surfaces can change what you see. Use a normal walking approach to judge useful detail, not just a still image of an empty driveway. The resulting plan should name each location, its purpose, recording arrangement and any limitation.
