If you recently closed on a new home in Reno and someone knocked on your door within the first few days, there's a good chance it was a Safe Haven Security representative. Safe Haven is one of the largest ADT authorized dealers in the United States and they operate aggressively in new construction neighborhoods. Understanding who they are and how they sell before you open the door makes a significant difference.

Safe Haven Is Not ADT

This is the most important thing to understand before any conversation with a Safe Haven rep.

Safe Haven Security is an authorized dealer for ADT. They sell ADT-monitored systems but they are an entirely separate company. The contract you sign is with Safe Haven, not with ADT. Your monitoring is provided by ADT but your contractual relationship, your billing, your cancellation rights, and any disputes you have are all with Safe Haven.

⚠️ If you ever have a problem and contact ADT directly, ADT will tell you to contact your dealer. ADT has no authority over your Safe Haven contract and cannot resolve disputes on your behalf. You are a Safe Haven customer, not an ADT customer, even though your monitoring panel may say ADT on it.

Why They Target New Construction Neighborhoods

New construction neighborhoods are the most valuable territory for door-to-door alarm sales teams for several reasons.

Every homeowner is new. They arrived recently, they don't know the area well, they don't have established relationships with local service providers, and they are in the middle of making dozens of decisions about their new home. A security system feels like a responsible early purchase.

New homeowners have just demonstrated they can make a large financial commitment. They signed a mortgage. The psychological barrier to signing another contract is lower than it is for someone who has been settled in their home for years.

New construction subdivisions are dense and organized. A sales team can cover an entire neighborhood systematically in a short time.

⚠️ Safe Haven reps in new construction areas sometimes present their visit as connected to the builder or the neighborhood. They may mention the builder's name, reference the neighborhood specifically, or imply they have a relationship with the development. This is a sales technique. Safe Haven has no affiliation with DR Horton, Lennar, Pulte, or any other builder in the Reno area.

If You Bought a DR Horton Home, You May Already Own Your Alarm Equipment

This is something Safe Haven reps are not going to volunteer.

DR Horton and several other major builders in the Reno market include alarm system equipment in the purchase price of the home. Sensors on the doors and windows, a panel, sometimes a doorbell camera. If that equipment was part of your home purchase, you own it outright.

You do not need to sign a new contract with Safe Haven or anyone else to use equipment you already own. You need a monitoring service, which is a separate and far less expensive commitment than a full equipment and monitoring contract. There are monitoring-only options available that do not require replacing equipment you already own or signing a 36-month agreement.

Before signing anything with a rep who shows up after your closing, find out exactly what alarm equipment came with your home and whether you own it. That one question can save you thousands of dollars.

The Same Tactics You Will See at the Door

Safe Haven uses the same door-to-door sales training that runs across the industry. If you have read our full breakdown of door-to-door alarm sales tactics you will recognize all of these.

The 30-day trial
Reps tell you that you have 30 days to try the system and cancel if you don't like it. The FTC Cooling Off Rule gives you 3 business days to cancel any contract signed at your home. Some reps do have discretion to offer genuine 30-day cancellation periods but this must be written into your contract to be enforceable. A verbal promise means nothing. Read our full guide on how to cancel a door-to-door alarm contract if you need to use your cancellation rights.
Getting inside your home
Outside they are a pest, inside they are a guest. Once a rep is in your kitchen the dynamic shifts completely and it becomes much harder to end the conversation without signing something. Keep them on the doorstep. They will ask to see your back door, offer to check the existing panel in your home, or ask if they can come to your counter to write things down. Every request is designed to get them through the threshold.
The tech around the corner
Rep tells you a technician is finishing up nearby and can install tonight. This is pressure to get equipment in your home before you have had time to read the contract or sleep on it. Once sensors are on your doors and a panel is on your wall, cancelling feels harder even if you are within your legal rights. Installations are not quick jobs. People have had technicians in their homes past midnight.
The manager call
Rep steps away, makes a brief call, comes back with a special deal his manager approved just for you tonight. Former reps have described this as a rehearsed technique rather than a genuine call. The deal existed before he knocked. The urgency is manufactured.
The buyout promise
If you already have a monitoring contract from another company, the rep may promise Safe Haven will pay it off. Get that in writing from the company before you sign anything new. Many homeowners have ended up paying two contracts simultaneously because that promise was made by someone who had no authority to honor it and was gone by October.

What to Do When They Knock

You are not obligated to engage at the door. You are not required to let anyone in, answer questions, or accept a sales pitch.

If you do want to hear what they are offering, keep the conversation on the doorstep. Ask for their company name, company ID, and solicitor's permit. Do not sign anything at the door. Take any written quote they offer and tell them you will be in touch after you have had time to review it.

If you already signed something and want to cancel, act immediately. Read our step-by-step guide on how to cancel a door-to-door alarm contract and the FTC Cooling Off Rule. You have 3 business days. Written notice, certified mail, keep the receipt.

Want a local alternative before you sign anything?
Kiwi Alarms installs security systems, cameras, smart locks, and monitored smoke and CO detection throughout Reno and a 100-mile radius. Every install is done personally by Scott Ferguson. No contractors, no call centers, no door-to-door sales. Free consultation, no pressure.
